Forestry

Wood is Liberia’s third major export commodity. Almost half of the country is covered with forest. The largest forest reserves are found in the Northwest and southeast regions of the country. Liberia’s extensive tropical rain forests include mahogany, fig, rubber, ironwood, and various kinds of palms trees.

The Government is supportive, at the highest level, of increased processing of logs locally to enhance employment opportunities and generate more revenue for Government through increased value added.

Any potential entrepreneur interested in investing in the forestry sector of Liberia must:

  • Apply in writing to the managing director of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA)
  • Include sketch map of the envisaged area
  • Include feasibility study based on sustained yield management of the area
  • Provide description of the technical know-how, the equipment and financial resources including bank reference, personnel listing, including two B.Sc. Liberian in general forestry.
